In Plain Sight by Senayda Pierre

Blurb:

“Hide in plain sight. Grandfather’s mantra is forever ingrained in me.”

Sahalie is the last of her lineage, bearing supernatural abilities gifted by the Spirits. She knows that in order to unlock her full potential she needs to find her mate. Yet in order to protect herself Sahalie knows she cannot reveal her secret abilities nor share her lineage with anyone but her true mate. She feels an instant and an undeniable connection with Yuma. Her Spirit Animal, a sassy little red fox is also drawn to the man’s Spirit Animal, a powerful tiger.

The problem?

Yuma is the son of an Elder. An Elder’s son means Yuma is neck-deep in community politics and drama. And she wants none of that. While Sahalie tries to avoid Yuma, the pull of true mates is evident and soon they find themselves unable to stay apart.

“What is it about you Sahalie?” I voice the question that’s haunted me since I first locked gazes with her.

Yuma has a very difficult decision to make… Will he follow his heart and Spirit Animal’s wishes and claim Sahalie as his true mate or will he uphold his duty to the communities and follow through with an arranged mating?

Yuma’s life-altering decision will affect everyone… not just him and Sahalie but the future of all their communities.

REVIEW

I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I agreed to review this new release for Senayda Pierre. I am familiar with a previous release of hers Willfully Compelled and I enjoyed that book a lot. The idea of Spirit Animals struck me as a unique idea and was definitely interested to see where the author would go with it.

What a roller coaster this book was!

Within the first few pages it is more than obvious that the author did a great deal of research. I was intrigued with the idea of Silver Fox and Sky Woman. As the book unfolded I have to be honest and admit that I assumed this book would be a cut and dry - hero[ine] finds mate and are revealed to be Silver Fox and Sky Woman reborn. WRONG!

Sahalie has been hiding her true heritage among her people her entire life. [Sidenote: the author makes it plain that these people that live in within this community are NOT human. They are more in tune with the elements Earth, Wind, Air and Fire and are paired with an actual animal that is their Spirit Animal] Unlike the majority of her community, she has the ability to possess two Spirit Animals and has to conceal this or else her life would no longer be her own. As a result of bad pairings in the past their race has become severely diluted and a lot of the prominent bloodlines that once existed have now disappeared. It is Sahalie's wish to temporarily leave the community to go to college so that she can study genetics and figure out what her community's issue is. Unfortunately, while pursuing her education a member of her family passes away and she returns home.

Sahalie returns home and that is where she meets Yuma. It is obvious to me that Yuma and Sahalie are true mates and I am ecstatic. I assumed that the rest of the book is Yuma's pursuit of Sahalie and then their final come together.

Yes they are true mates and yes Sahalie leads Yuma on a merry chase, but Sahalie's initial path is not with Yuma. And this was so hard for me to accept because of the way that it is delivered. Yuma has community responsibilities seeing as how he is being groomed to be a future Elder. He is meant to have a political marriage that will tie their particular community with an equally successful community. What is messed up is that Sahalie is never told this. She goes through the motions of discovering and falling in love with and never being told, by Yuma might I add, that they can't be together. It was absolutely horrible to have in the back of my mind that this beautiful pairing of Yuma and Sahalie can't last. I stayed positive and assumed at the end of the day that Yuma would go against tradition and his father and make the right choice i..e. Sahalie.

The journey for Sahalie to become who the Spirits mean for her to be does not completely include Yuma and I found that to be refreshing. She has a destiny and a purpose - to help her people and the way to do so takes her away from her comfort zone and the community she has grown up with.

I absolutely loved this book. I loved the characters, no matter how flawed and spineless I initially found some of them to be. The author took great pains to impart upon the reader all of the emotions that these characters are feeling at any point in time and I felt them. They were amazing. Each scene leading up to that horrible moment was so bittersweet, but I loved how it paved the way for Sahalie to accept and fulfill her destiny (for lack of a better word). I absolutely loved every character in this book and appreciated each one. I want a Spirit Animal!

I will most definitely read this book again and would love it if the author were to revisit these characters.

Much thanks to the author and Rock Star PR for allowing me to read this book via Netgalley.

Execution Style (Code 11 KPD SWAT Series) by Lani Lynn Vale

Blurb:

Miller Spurlock might seem like a laid back man on the outside, but piss him off, or violate his trust, and he’ll show you the meaning of pain.
He was a Navy SEAL.  He could kill a man a hundred different ways and not break a sweat.

He’s also a police officer and member of the SWAT team, which means he has the knowledge and skills to get away with it.

Rage boils in his gut when he witnesses what happens to the beautiful Mercy Shepherd during a SWAT op from hell that even his worst nightmare couldn’t conjure up.  And it surprises the hell out of him when she wants him, and him only, to comfort her in the aftermath.

Miller becomes the one shining beacon of light at the bottom of Mercy’s pit of despair.

The one man that could pull her through the rough days ahead and make her whole again.

And during her road back to herself, she realizes that she’s got the one thing she ever wanted in life…a hero to call her own.
Review:
The beginning of this book. Dear sweet baby Jesus in a manger----why!? If LLV was trying to give me a heart attack she almost did. I actually put down my Kindle and had to take a break. Mercy Mercy Mercy...WHY...in front of the entire town no less.

For the sake of throwing some new plot devices into her series I can see why LLV did it, but my heart went out to Mercy.

Miller stepped in from jump street and was, for all intents and purposes, her knight in shining armor. He was there for her on the sidelines before it happened, throughout the horrible act and afterwards for the clean up. So without blowing the entire premise of the book I'll put some spoiler alerts up.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER : I did NOT like how Mercy used Miller as her scapegoat baby daddy. In my opinion that's what she was doing and WTH Miller for going along with it. That aspect of their relationship I had no liking for.

I enjoyed the rest of the book (as per usual for a Lani Lynn Vale book) and was so glad to see previous characters showing up.

Towards the end of the book, another ball dropped that had me completely worked up again. I was already on the fence with her choice of a villain and how aggressive said villain was, but I quickly got on board with it and then one of the most devastating parts of the LLV book history happened. This accident, so perfectly staged, set up Foster's story. Overall there were parts where I questioned my like of Mercy and Miller, but I did enjoy this different type of LLV book. It isn't going to be added to my fav LLV book list, but it is still worth reading.

Bleeding Love (Hope Town book 2) by Harper Sloan

Summary

I've loved once. I gave everything that I had to that love. Blindly believing that nothing could ever take that feeling away from me. Away from us. And when my little world of happiness was ripped from my fingers, I felt a loss that still haunts me to this day.

Now I use that lingering grief as a shield to keep my heart from loving again. It's that fear that keeps me from letting anyone, except my daughter, get close enough to make it hurt. To make my heart bleed when I inevitably lose again.

Until the day I met Liam Beckett and everything I thought I had protected myself from was shoved back in my face.

He's on a mission to prove to me that a love worth having is a love worth fighting for.

Review

Ok, I'm going to be honest. I wanted Megan to give in from page one.

I mean this is Liam Beckett and we all know who his dad is. (If you don't- STOP and read the Corps Security books first or else you'll be so lost you'll never be found) And because I knew his dad's story I knew this man was made of steel and whatever [whoever] he committed to - was for the long haul.

This love story did not disappoint. Megan is in a hard place and she needs to heal. Intellectually, I get it and I agree she does need to heal but still....

So when Megan has her "come to Jesus" moment in the bathroom I am all for it. I was screaming yes yes yes FINALLY. Give in to the luscious temptation that is Liam.

But as much as I plotted on Megan I still had to acknowledge that her recent loss has messed her up such that she doesn't know up from down.

Harper did an amazing job of playing this up and showing you how much Jack meant to her. I mean...sob city. There is plenty evidence of how broken she is, how she is NOT dealing with it and how it is leaking out onto her family.

Now Molly. If there was ever a child that I fell in love with ALMOST as much as Cohen - its Molly. I won't spoil it, but tea parties are so important in this book.

There are so many relationship dynamics running thru this book and friendship is running neck and neck with love. Dani (from Hope Town book 1) and Liam are best friends. I wholeheartedly believe that their close friendship played such a huge part in Liam's patience and understanding because he and Dani were somewhat the same as Jack and Megan, minus the obvious. My eyes were pealed for every eye opener Megan had because they were very necessary. I wanted so much for her to live, to move on and to give Liam the same type of love he was offering her. Liam deserved a medal for the Job-like patience he was serving up to Megan. But when Megan finally came through cue Air Supply's Two Less Lonely People in the World....

Review

Oh my goodness, was there ever a more complicated man in a series? Jesse was so broken and seemed happy to stay that way and I don't think anyone can argue that Bell is living half of a life I know they shouldn't be sharing a bed. He knows. She knows. EVERYONE KNOWS. These two are a train wreck of destiny. You know its going to blow up in both of their faces and all you can do is sit on the sidelines and watch.

But oh what a journey.

I love the build up of their relationship. If you're familiar with this series then you know that Bell aka Nurse Bell has appeared in a previous book and she is not here for Jesse at all.

But he turns on the charm and forces some interactions with her and she's caught.

Jesse is living with some serious guilt and a crapload of PTSD from his time as a soldier. Bell is living with the kidnapping and possible death of her older sister. Their common ground is both of their family situations are less than nice. Jesse absolutely despises his father and Bell, as I mentioned before, is trying to live her own life while at the same time deal with an overprotective mother and a depressed father. Neither of these two are in any position to start any type of relationship, f__k buddy or otherwise. And when the sh*t hit the fan I was literally open-mouthed in Jesse's response. I knew he was messed up, but I didn't know how much so until the scene he made.

As in most arguments and altercations both sides throw the truth around and the other's eyes are opened to it. What I think is amazing is how they were able to internalize it, use it to make adjustments to themselves and move forward.

In my opinion, this book is a helluva follow up to Incandescent and Affliction.

Review

From page one this author built the anticipation up so well. You knew something was going to happen, but you had no clue what. It was obvious that the young couple, Lea and Austin, wouldn't get their HEA in Vegas after graduation - you just didn't know why. And when the reason came down it was quite the shock.

But it worked so well.

Before I go any further I do want to address the one thing I wasn't too fond of in this book.
I, personally, didn't like how easily Austin was willing to get romantically involved with Lea again. One minute he was all

and the next he was all concerned for her well being and allowing those old feelings to take hold.

What I did appreciate the most in this book was when Austin told Lea he hated her. Call me evil call me heartless - whatever - it was GOOD. It was raw, realistic and so unbelievably honest on Austin's part. Its rare when a person can be that honest about how they're feeling based on someone's actions. Austin was so believable I was all

I also appreciated the way author pointed out how Josie failed Lea. As a parent, she should've steered Lea towards counseling but instead she fed into Lea's desire to run.
So much going on and I wasn't in any rush for Lea and Austin to get back together. I was team Austin from day one and remained so up until the book ended. Its rare that I am 100% on the hero's side, but in this book I was. I tried to remain neutral and understanding of both the hero and heroine's side, but when it came down to it I found myself leaning towards Austin 90% of the time.

BUT...when all is said and done.

Bang Switch (Code 11 KPD SWAT book 3) by Lani Lynn Vale

Blurb:
Lachlan Downy was a lover, not a fighter.

Okay, he wouldn't lie, he was a fighter, too. But nobody had to know that. Especially not Memphis Tennessee Conner and her stuffy attitude when it came to cops and ‘men like him.’

Memphis knew cops. Her daddy was a cop. He was also the president of a motorcycle club. Needless to say, he’s about as alpha as they come, and she’s tired of overbearing men who think they know how to run her life better than she does.

So when Downy comes into her life running his smooth talking mouth, she realizes that she’ll have to stand strong against his pretty words and promises to give her what she needs.

Downy is determined, though.

He’s the hostage negotiator for KPD SWAT, and he’s never met a person, man or woman, he couldn't talk around into his way of thinking.

Although, Memphis is about to show him just how much he miscalculated.

Seems Downy may not be as smooth as he thought, and Memphis is just the girl to show him the error of his ways.

Main character(s): Lachlan Downy and Memphis Tennessee Conner

Side characters I definitely want to read about in the futureFoster, Miller, Michael, Bennett, Mercy Shepherd, Sean

Predictable plot: NOT AT ALL! The idea of an extensive secret dog fighting ring is super fresh and exciting.

Memorable parts of the book: How Memphis and Downy figure out they live
in the same complex, first time Memphis and Downy have sex, and when
Memphis does her final Ultrasound Tech test.

Honestly, one of the strongest parts of LLV’s writing is her ability to incorporate
humor into each of her books. She has heavy plotlines and a lot of areas that
touch the reader in all sorts of ways. I always run the gamut of emotions in
her books. There’s humor, aggression, action, anger, sadness, lust…it’s all there.

There is so much to love in this book. The hilarity of the situation
Memphis finds herself in when she realizes who lives next door.
Downy is the ultimate older hot guy that "f__s the fear of his job out of her."
YES YES YES! Did I mention that Downy's first name is Lachlan?
And that he has a beard? And that he has green eyes? AND he has sexy tats?
YES JESUS YES! If Downy exists in real life - please let him move to
Los Angeles and we meet. Haha The tension between Downy and his family
is so good and I love the tie in between the Prescotts and his family.
Six degrees of separation at its finest. Throughout this book I told myself
Downy is just not cut out for the negotiator life and I was glad to see him
get offered a police spokesman position. His calm and cool personality suits that job perfectly.

But the absolute best part of this book is the wedding.
BOOM!
