Willfully Compelled (Unintentional Sacrifices Book 1) by Senayda Pierce

Review:

Thanks to Rockstar Lit PR for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

I am a sci-fi fan and this was right up my alley. The first thing I noticed when reading this book was the sense of desolation, loneliness, danger and grief. I felt so bad for the main character Lysandra. Her family was gone and her best friend was fading. There was no salvation to be had in this post-apocalyptic world, no safe haven. Every animal and person was out to survive in any way possible. I wasn’t sure where the author was taking this, but an underwater world was unexpected and appreciated.

At the initial description of the underwater creatures, I wasn’t sure if I could get into that but I quickly warmed up to it. I loved how there wasn’t a person acting as a villain. Surviving and helping the Earth rebuild was the plot and all of the other issues were bumps in the road.
According to a legend Lysandra and her identical twin sister Leondra are supposed to save the world. How you say? The reader doesn’t know until almost half-way into the book. I loved the idea that they both had power, but their powers weren’t identical. Leondra had power thru words and Lysandra had power through her song [music]. Together, the twins would use their powers to re-establish (for lack of a better word) the land above water.  Lysandra is introduced to the underwater creatures (mer-people doesn’t seem to fit so I won’t use it) royal family and feels an intense attraction to one of the Princes.  The story shoots off from there with so much action, sexual tension, and pressure to save the world with a huge dose of grief [on Lysandra’s part] about lost family and etc etc. I enjoyed this book and loved how the author set up future issues with the gods and with the twins’ future children.  I’ll definitely continue this series.

Excerpt: Lysandra turned toward Phoebe. Her friend’s lips were blue. Her complexion deathly pale. She shook Phoebe hard. She wanted to scream at her best friend to wake up but she couldn’t afford to attract attention. She bent down to ensure that Phoebe was still breathing. Her best friend’s haggard breaths let her know how bad things were. She choked back a sob as she hoisted Phoebe up. She sighed in relief and continued toward the river. Just being close to the river gave her a sense of renewed energy and hope. Her skin tingled with anticipation at the clear sparkling water in front of her. Her mouth watered as she stared longingly at the river. She gently placed Phoebe down, a few feet away from the bank. A loud splash froze the blood in her veins. Her head snapped in the direction of the noise. Most of the herd had followed the leader but a straggler had attempted to get one last drink. Lysandra just saw its rear end as it disappeared under the water’s surface. The water buffalo’s legs kicked in desperation as it met its watery death. The other animals scattered as if a lion had approached the river. She remained frozen with horror. For years she’d heard of the dangers of the water but had never seen it for herself. She looked around desperately. There was no doubt about it, they were in danger and Phoebe was dying. The harsh wind blew sand in her eyes. She put her chin to her chest and blinked hard. They’d learned the hard way to not rub the sand or debris from their eyes. She reached out touching Phoebe’s face. Her hand stilled. A sob escaped her lips as her palm touched cold skin. Even the viscous sun and heat couldn’t hide death’s frigidness. Desolation blanketed her. She was too late. She couldn’t help her best friend. Lysandra leaned over Phoebe listening hopefully for small, haggard breaths. She frantically checked her pulse. Something to hint at Phoebe still living, but she found nothing. There was nothing there but a cold, lifeless body. Lysandra tilted her head back. Her parched throat couldn’t let out the scream that resonated within her. Her body shook with tearless sobs. There was nothing left for her in this life. Her family was gone. Her best friend lay dead by her side. The world was literally a living hell. She jolted as Phoebe’s body jerked. A flare of hope quickly died as her addled mind registered what she saw. Phoebe’s body disappeared beneath the surface just like the water buffalo’s. She was too slow to catch her best friend’s body as something dark dragged her underwater. She jumped in not caring if her loud splash attracted unwanted attention. Phoebe’s silhouette disappeared into the depths of the river. She frantically kicked to keep up with her friend’s body but it was too late. Lysandra lost all hope. Her lungs screamed to get to the surface but her heart sank with sorrow. In her previous life she would’ve cherished the peacefulness of the silent water world. She might’ve reveled in its beauty. But now it only represented death. Sharp talons imbedded in her thigh yanking her down. She gasped in shock and terror before savagely kicking at whatever had hold of her. The talons gripped harder making her scream in pain. Lysandra inhaled deeply hoping to fill her lungs with water. She desperately wanted to drown before being eaten alive. She couldn’t see what held onto her as the surface got farther and farther away. Her body tensed. Her mind screamed that she was drowning. Her lungs expanded with liquid but didn’t burn. She wheezed as terror flowed through her body. She fought the black dots that raced in front of her eyes refusing to lose consciousness to panic. The talons loosened around her thigh as she regained some semblance of control over her body. Her mind warred with itself as she fought for reasoning. Was she going mad? Had she blacked out and was only dreaming? How could her lungs take in water and treat it like air? “Just get it over with” She whispered as she closed her eyes quietly sobbing. A quick and painless death was not meant to be though; whoever or whatever had planned for her to be cognizant throughout. Her eye flashed open as her body jerked to the left. She gasped as the talons dragged her into a cavernous room. She stared in horrified rapture as sunlight filtered through the oversized underwater cave. “Interesting” a deep voice rumbled. Lysandra stiffened as the talons released its grip from her thigh and shackled her wrist to the rock wall. She refused to look in the direction of her captor. Her eyes flitted around absorbing her surroundings. The cave was beautiful. Colorful fish swam by unbothered by its occupants. “Who grabbed her?” The same voice interrupted the peaceful silence. She sensed more than one presence in the cavernous room. So her captor was not this bastard with the deep voice. “Sire” another voice responded. His voice was much closer to her. She scowled knowing it was this SOB who’d captured her. “She jumped in immediately after one of the sentinels grabbed the cadaver.” Lysandra shuddered at the word cadaver and bit her lip knowing they were referring to Phoebe. She swallowed the boulder-size lump in her throat. What had they done with her best friend?

ARC: Until July (Until Her) by Aurora Rose Reynolds

Thank you to TRSOR Promotions and the author for allowing me to participate

Wes Silver wasn’t looking for love, but when July Mayson literally knocks him on his ass during their first encounter, his world is turned upside down by the quirky blonde, and every moment with her makes him more determined to protect her.

July Mayson doesn’t understand the pull she feels toward the bad boy biker Wes Silver, but she knows being with him is like nothing she’s ever felt before. Now all she has to do is tell her overprotective father, Asher Mayson, that she’s found her boom.

Review:

Over too quickly…. That is the official title of my review for Aurora Rose Reynold’s “Until July.”

1.       You should be familiar with her Until Series to fully appreciate this book

Right when I’m jonesing for a kick ass read and am in a goodreads rut BOOM I get an ARC delivered.

I’m such a fan I already know who July is, but who I don’t know is her love interest. Wes Silver. This man is all types of no nonsense Alpha type.

  • Sex on a stick
  • Former Military
  • Biker
  • Piercing green eyes
  • Tattoos
  • Not afraid to spank that @$$

The author did an excellent job of building to characters who couldn’t be more different, but still found their way together. I loved July and her silly BFF Kayan. STAKE OUT is all I’m going to say. You’re not best friends forever unless you’ve done a stakeout (stalk session) together.  I appreciate the plot for its freshness as well as the stumbling blocks she threw in the path of the two characters. It wasn’t a straight forward meet, have sex, drama, settle down. For the sake of not inserting spoiler alerts I will say that this book is chock full of sexy bikers/military types and feisty chicas. You will also get a quick reunion peek into the lives of some of the guys that started it all – Nico and Asher.

Wes’ temper and July’s don’t even try it personality are so perfect for each other. I was, of course, on July’s side throughout the entire book UNTIL the issue of introducing him to her father popped up. I’ll leave it at that.
This is definitely a must read. If you aren’t familiar with the Until series this will motivate you to buy the first generation series while you wait for the next release for this generation.  Aurora has further cemented her place on my auto-buy roster because besides the plot, character interaction and hilarity – the love scenes are devastating.

ARC: Silver Bastard (Silver Valley, #1) by Joanna Wylde

Silver Bastard (Silver Valley, #1)Silver Bastard by Joanna Wylde
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Man, this book...hard to read? Yes, in some places but overall I did enjoy it. Talk about a sucky childhood/teenage life. smh

Sometimes I can find a silver lining, but Becca's life....

And let's be honest here. Puck is no prize, but he and Becca work. I'm not a stranger to this author and her previous Reaper's MC series and this is a "spin off." I do appreciate that the author wanted to create a story that wasn't all I love you/you love me and the only thing holding us back our mutual ex's. NO, LIFE is holding both of them back and it is crapping on them from all avenues. BUT I still enjoyed this story.

If you're expecting an easy read - this is not it. Yes, there are blunt and rough bikers. Yes, there are steamy love scenes. Yes, there are some seriously messed up moments. Yes, there are drug related moments. This is about that other side. Rough, gritty, and where life is almost always...NOT...fair.

Forgotten Sins (Sin Brothers, #1) by Rebecca Zanetti

Forgotten Sins (Sin Brothers, #1)Forgotten Sins by Rebecca Zanetti
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I knew it. I knew it. I knew it.

I am no newcomer when it comes to Rebecca Zanetti, but something made me pick up the Sin Brothers series. I devoured the Dark Protector series a month or two ago and I was due for another fix. I read a review for the newest release and told myself I needed to get the entire series and start from Book One. And thank heaven for 7 eleven that I did.

Genetically engineered soldiers categorized into a team by eye color. I AM SO THERE. The Sin Brothers, which is actually the name of their security firm, consists of Matt, Nate, Shane and Jory. This book is about Shane who has been discovered with amnesia and the only person the hospital contacts is his estranged wife of two years, Josie. Now Josie hasn't seen hide nor hair of Shane in two years ( did I say that already :) ) and doesn't know whether to kick his @$$ or kiss him.

The chemistry between these two leaps off the pages and slaps you right in the boobs.

The action scenes and the suspense in this book. Woo wee! One minute you think okay so the trouble they're in has nothing to do with the brothers' secret military project status, but then...

The author hits you with little tidbits that make you think otherwise, but you're not entirely sure.....I LOVED THIS BOOK.
And to the author

Headed to read book 2.....

ARC : Paradox by River Savage (Part of the What If Anthology)

 Summary:

What if the Knights Rebels aren't who you think they are? What if one moment in your life was altered? Or the path you took diverged from what you had planned? Will the battle of good verses evil become the ultimate game changer or will true love still prevail?

 Review
What to say? What to say?

I started reading and I thought I knew where the story was going and BAM – it hit a hard right.

To back up a little bit I will say that to understand the differences in Paradox from what actually happened you will need to read the previous books. It confused me for a second that I read the first half of the book twice to make sure I was reading it correctly. Once I knew I was – I was surprised and intrigued. I always think about what if certain characters went a different way or what if certain scenes went a different direction. Though, I won’t say I’d like to see it again I do appreciate the freshness of this book. The author threw something different into the mix and it worked. The reader was able to get their “what if” fix, but at the end of the day we return to the true story.

You always hear the phrase “meant to be” and it definitely seems like whatever road Nix and Kadence are on they are destined to be together.  In this book Nix took a left turn, but he still ended up right with Kadence.
