Nightmares.
Sterling and Ruthie have more things in common than they realize, even though from the outside it doesn’t seem like they do.
Blood.
Sterling is a decorated war hero.
Ruthie is an ex-con.
Their two worlds should’ve never collided, but fate has a way of turning life in the direction least expected. Now Ruthie has to try to come to terms with the fact that she’s in love with a biker who’s also a decorated Navy SEAL. One who leaves for months at a time with little to no advance warning, taking her heart with him each time he goes.
Pain.
Sterling has a lot of things to overcome in order to have Ruthie, the biggest being her mind.
She doesn’t think she’s good enough.
He thinks she’s perfect.
Now it’s up to him to show her just how right he can be.

Ruthie and Sterling.

From the previous book we know that Ruthie is Sawyer’s former cellmate from prison. We know that she killed her husband – cell block tango style and that he deserved it.

Sterling is a member of the Dixie Wardens MC, active duty SEAL team member, and has a serious interest in Ruthie who feels like she isn’t worthy to be with someone like Sterling. These two are friends as he and his [foster] brothers come to her job daily to buy snacks.

This couple is meant for each other. They both have PTS and I very much enjoyed, even though it was a messed up moment, when they both shared their painful experiences surrounding a Toyota Corolla. This book is riddled with these personal moments that further the notion that these two have to end up together. As per usual with a Lani Lynn Vale book when the couple in question finally do make it to the physical side of their relationship the pages literally implode. Case in point – the rain scene.

I’ll leave it at that.

An important thing about this book to understand is its main purpose is NOT to tell the story of Sterling and Ruthie getting together. There are many surrounding side-plots that total an awesome read. There is the issue of Ruthie’s treatment by the town and its police force. There is the issue of Sterling’s active duty status as a S.E.A.L. There is the issue of Sterling’s birth mother. There is the issue of Ruthie trying to make a go of her life after getting out of prison.
There is so much more than Sterling and Ruthie coming together as a couple. Not all of it is good and not all of it is bad. There are several grab your chest moments.

But overall I enjoyed each and every delicious morsel. The good. The bad. The heart-wrenching. The sexy. There was much satisfaction to be had in this book.

ARC : Counter to my Intelligence (The Heroes of The Dixie Wardens MC #7) by Lani Lynn Vale

Sometimes the heart wants what it can’t have.

That’s the motto Silas Mackenzie, the president of The Dixie Wardens MC, has lived by since he was a young man.

Now he’s well on the way to middle age, has three grown children and he’s lusting after a woman he should definitely stay away from.

Especially not one that his ex-girlfriend had given birth to, and happens to be only twenty-nine years old.

Sawyer isn’t a young girl at heart, though.

She’s seen the inside of a jail cell for eight long years, and every one of them was spent paying for a crime she didn’t commit.

Silas Mackenzie knows as soon as he sees her that the she has sacrificed enough.
And maybe…just maybe…so has he.

It’s time for Silas Mackenzie to get what he deserves, and, in the process, put a little bit of happy back into Sawyer’s world, one rough, bearded kiss at a time.

By the first chapter we know Sawyer’s story. She was incarcerated for 8 years on a vehicular manslaughter (?) charge and now she is getting out. I had to stop my mind from immediately going the Orange is the New Black route, but there were some similarities. Cue the skeevy prison guards.
I loved this story because of Sawyer and all the issues she has to deal with as a newly released convict. I loved how the author addressed the secrets her friends and family had, but was too concerned with her mental state to tell her about. I loved how you were able to get inside Sawyer’s head and witness her attempt to join society after having been locked up for 8 long years. Priorities change and obviously, she has changed. She didn’t have the same interests as she did before. Obviously. And her appreciation for the little things i.e. eating whatever she wanted whenever she wanted was more pronounced. Kudos to the author for addressing this.

The secrets though; that was what had me living in suspense.

  • At one time her parents were divorced.
  • Her boyfriend from before she went in wasn’t who she thought he was.
  • Silas’ past friendship with Reba

Enter Silas motha freaking Mackenzie.

If you like family drama then you will definitely love the Silas character. If you’re familiar with Lani Lynn Vale’s other books then you already know there is MAD drama and hard feelings (to put it mildly) between Silas and his children. Throw Sawyer into the mix and you have the best ‘ride or die’ couple the author has ever written. Silas is Team Sawyer and believes in her innocence and her as an overall good person regardless of her ex-convict status. Sawyer is Team Silas and is concerned about his relationship between him and his kids to the point where she wants to get involved. These two are meant to be. They burn up the sheets and they’re there for each other unconditionally.

This book is actually coming for the number one spot on my favorite Lani Lynn Vale books. Watch out Coup de Grace!!!

Lani Lynn Vale is married to the love of her life that she met in high school. She fell in love with him because he was wearing baseball pants. Ten years later they have three perfectly crazy children and a cat named Demon who likes to wake her up at ungodly times in the night. They live in the greatest state in the world, Texas. She writes contemporary and romantic suspense, and has a love for all things romance. You can find Lani in front of her computer writing away in her fictional characters world...that is until her husband and kids demand sustenance in the form of food and drink.
